When a Japanese airfield was captured in 1942, the Guadalcanal island airfield was named after a bomb squadron commander named Lofton Henderson. He died as he led his bombing squadron into an attack on Japanese carriers in the historic Battle of Midway. He was the first American marine aviator to die during battle.
